THE FIELD GUIDE / CHOOSING WELL

How to size up an indie app before you install it.

A practical checklist for looking beyond the launch page.

Start with the job

Write down the specific thing you want an app to help you do. A clear need makes it easier to judge the product and to stop browsing when you find something suitable.

Find the person or project behind it

Look for an identifiable developer, an official website or repository, and a route to support. For an open-source project, contributors may be the people sustaining it rather than a single founder.

Check the terms of ownership

Look at the current pricing, purchase conditions, export options, and platform requirements. Decide whether you are comfortable with the ongoing cost and how you would leave if your needs change.

Read the maintenance signals

A changelog, release history, or clear status update can tell you more than a long list of planned features. A quiet project is not automatically a bad one, but an explicit maintenance pause matters.

Try a small, real task

Use a nonessential example first. Notice setup friction, confusing defaults, and whether you can retrieve the result. Make your own workflow the test rather than relying solely on someone else’s recommendation.
