Five details to capture when identifying a mystery part.
Give your search better evidence before you buy a replacement.
1. The whole object
Capture the entire part against a plain background. Include a second angle so a single perspective does not hide the shape.
2. Every marking
Take a clear close-up of printed labels, stamped numbers, brand names, and symbols. Transcribe them so you can search the exact text as well as the photo.
3. Dimensions
Record measurements and units. A similar appearance is not enough to establish that two parts are interchangeable.
4. Where it came from
Note the equipment make, model, and the location of the part. Keep reference photos from before disassembly when available, and consult the manufacturer’s service information.
5. A confirmed match
Use search results or a photo-identification tool as leads. Confirm the part number and fit with manufacturer documentation or a qualified supplier before buying. Part Identifier Plus is one tool for exploring a photo; it is made by this publication’s studio and is not a substitute for confirmation.
