THE FIELD GUIDE / PHOTO & VIDEO

Better selfie lighting starts before you open an app.

A few deliberate changes can make your next photo easier to light.

Move before you adjust

Try facing a window or another broad light source. Take a reference photo, then turn slightly and take another. This helps you see how direction changes the shadows on your face.

Keep the comparison fair

Hold the camera at a similar distance and keep the background consistent while comparing settings. Change one variable at a time so you can tell what made the difference.

Use screen lighting within its limits

A bright screen can contribute light at close range, but its effect depends on distance and the room. Compare the result in your actual environment rather than expecting it to light an entire scene.

Judge the saved photo

Look at the saved image for skin detail, distracting color casts, and blown-out bright areas. Choose the effect you like rather than assuming more enhancement is always better.

An app to explore

Halo is one option for experimenting with phone-based selfie lighting and glow effects. It is made by this publication’s studio, Redmont Digital. Our Halo introduction links to the current App Store listing.
